Furious at being teased by his classmates after a casual joke made by his teacher, a 16-year-old boy created a fake Facebook profile of his teacher and tried to malign her reputation.
The teenager was booked by the Cyber Police Station on Tuesday and has been charged with impersonation and defamation under IPC and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. According to police, the accused is a Class X student in a secondary school in eastern Mumbai. Police said that the complainant, who has been teaching at the school for several years, recently found a fake profile in her name on Facebook, and that the user had started interacting with some of her students.
“The user of the fake profile was adding her students to his friends list and chatting with them posing as the complainant. During these conversations, he was saying things that were defamatory to her reputation. The accused had even taken pictures and personal details from the complainant’s actual profile to make the fake one look authentic. When he started doing this with a lot of her students, a few of them approached her and told her about it,” said a Crime Branch officer. The complainant approached the Cyber Police Station in Bandra Kurla Complex and an offence was registered. Police traced the IP address using which the account was created, and made further inquiries into the matter, which led them to the accused. He was picked up and confronted with the evidence, after which he confessed to the offence, police said.
“The accused had studied under the complainant last year, and during one of her classes, she had made fun of his name. While it was a casual and passing remark, it was picked up by a lot of his classmates, who kept teasing him about it for months together. Angry over the perceived humiliation, the accused decided to get back by defaming her,” the officer said.
